Silver lining for Kelowna baseball team

Published: August 28, 2012 12:00 PM
Updated: August 28, 2012 12:15 PM

The 2012 season didn't have the golden ending the Kelowna Cubs were hoping for.

Still, in the eyes of coach Mike Chamberlain, a silver medal as Team B.C. at the Western Canadian Peewee AA Baseball Championship was an accomplishment worthy of considerable celebration.

"Each time you look at it, the silver medal tends to shine a little more," said head coach Mike Chamberlain. "I look at the work we put into this, all the work the kids put in, and to walk away with something like this is pretty nice. I'm pretty proud of it and I think in time the kids will be, too. Of course they wanted gold, but silver is awfully good, too."

Carrying the colours of Team B.C., the Cubs headed to Morden, Manitoba Aug. 16 to 20 for the Westerns riding an 11-game winning streak.

Kelowna had gone undefeated at the zone championship, then did the same earlier this month in Chilliwack at the provincial championship as they claimed the B.C. title.

At Westerns, the Cubs continued their roll as the B.C. squad posted a 4-0 record in the round robin, extending their win streak to 15 games.

It wasn't until the final against Team Saskatchewan (Muenster Red Sox) that the Cubs met their match.

The Cubs had beaten Saskatchewan 7-4 in the round robin, but in the championship ran into a tough left-handed pitcher. Liam Hughes also pitched well for Team B.C., going 6 1/3 innings and striking out 13.

With the score tied 1-1 in the top of seventh inning, Team Sask struck for two runs to take a 3-1 lead. The Cubs were unable to rally in the seventh and were forced to settle for the silver medal.

"We had everything we wanted, we went 4-0 in the round robin, we were feeling strong and healthy," Chamberlain said. "But they had this big, strong left-hander who was really in control. We did a pretty good job over the course of the season coming through with runners on base. But against him we couldn't get it done. The boys still did a great job and gave it everything they had.

"This was a hard-working group that tried to get better everyday," he added. "It was fun watching their progress and it was an exceptional group of kids."

After the 2012 house season ended, the Cubs added two players from Rutland and began the summer ball schedule in early July. Over the summer, Kelowna posted a 26-5 record.

Top of the List: New Mexico homebuilders

The Business Weekly?s Aug. 31 print edition lists the top 18 New Mexico homebuilders by the number of full-time employees.

The list also includes data on the average price of homes sold in 2011 and the number of homes sold in 2011.

See the top five homebuilders by clicking here.

The Business Weekly asked the homebuilders what challenges they?ve faced recently. Here are some responses:

?The increased regulation on government-backed loans makes it increasingly difficult for buyers to qualify.? - Raylee Homes: A New Generation

?It?s always a challenge to locate all of the required resources (personnel, financing and vendors) when you?re starting construction on twice as many homes as you?re closing. Growth can be a problem, but it?s a good problem to have.? -Abrazo Homes

?We are challenged with rising costs, while at the same time meeting client goals for lower-priced homes. We?ve been meeting that challenge by value-engineering our homes during the design process and by working with vendors who agree to negotiate their costs through our builder purchasing co-op.? --New Haven Homes Inc.

Father Geek ? How to Teach Kids the Basics of Investing

GD Star Rating
loading...

By Evan Fischer
Sponsored Guest Contributor

Many parents realize that financial skills are an important part of functioning in the adult world, and so they teach their children about money management from an early age, through offering allowance for chores, setting up a savings account, and eventually showing kids how to balance a checkbook, keep a ledger, and even create a budget. But most adults fail to delve into lessons on investing simply because they don?t necessarily employ or understand the process themselves (although it could be that they just decide to cross that bridge when their kids come to it). However, it is important that children learn the benefits, drawbacks, and strategies involved in making investments for their future, as well as the basic types of investment options that are out there. Too often focus is spent on how to spend?responsibly?and not enough on how to save?intelligently.

Here are a few tips to help you impart this information to your own kids and learn a great deal yourself.

Knowledge is Key

The process starts with knowing your stuff. If you don?t know the first thing about investing, your lessons aren?t likely to be terribly informative. So you should start looking into investments that could benefit your kids now and in the future, such as a 529 account that will allow you to set aside money for each child?s college education, or CDs that your kids can put money into in the short-term in order to begin earning more than they would with a basic savings account. Of course, you will also want to eventually discuss lifetime investments like 401K and Roth IRA plans, as well as the possibility of a rounded portfolio that features stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and so on. But you first need to understand what these types of investing entail, including risks and rewards.

Risks and rewards? Like we see in games? But of course! A lot of this?investment?lingo is super heavy for children and not at all meaningful to them until they are in their teens. Why not play games where economics are part of the overall play? This is a great way to start them at any age to learn the basics through games.

Helping Hands

There are a couple of excellent resources that can help you, both online and in the real world. For example, sites like Investopedia offer tons of information for the novice investor, including definitions of terminology, background and current news on various markets, and even financial tutorials and simulators that can help you and your children explore the ins and outs of the wide world of investing. But if you feel like you want to put your money where your mouth is, you might also talk to professionals like a financial planner or a stock broker. Leading by example is one of the best ways to teach your kids life lessons, so investing in a smart and informed manner could go a long way toward underscoring the benefits of saving and investing money.

The Value of Value

Still, you may face a brick wall when it comes to discussing finances with kids,?especially?if they are younger. Many children don?t deal with money on a daily basis and the lessons you?re trying to teach them may not hold much weight. You can give them information on retirement accounts and basic trading strategies until you?re blue in the face, but it will go in one ear and out the other. For this reason, it helps to have real-world examples. And?understand, of course, we are not suggesting you tell your kids to ?plan now?. This is all about starting the process of education. So start by arranging for your kids to make small investments, be they real or?simulated. Take some money from their savings accounts, match it with your own funds, and purchase short-term certificates of deposit (6 months ? 1 year, for example). Once they mature you can show your kids how their money has grown, which will no doubt make them keen on the prospect of future investments. To speed the process up, complete the exercise using a spreadsheet so as to demonstrate how much the?investment?looks in the simulated future instead of waiting for it to mature. Using a spreadsheet also has the added benefit of creating visual examples such as graphs and pie charts that can help you when teaching as a visual aid.

Good luck. It?s never to early, although it might sound silly to talk Wall Street with a child who still watches?Sesame?Street. Keep in mind, however, that the earlier you start talking about the value of money, the deeper the?lesson?will sink in. For example, you wouldn?t talk about drugs to your kids for the first time seconds before they go to school. By talking about it early, you prepare them early. And a prepared geek is a better geek.

India Supreme Court upholds death sentence for Mumbai attacker

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India's Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld the death sentence for Mohammad Ajmal Kasab, the lone survivor of a group of militants who attacked the country's financial capital, Mumbai, in 2008 killing 166 people.

"The Supreme Court has today dismissed the appeal of Mohammad Kasab," Gopal Subramaniam, a lawyer for the prosecution, told reporters after the verdict.

Kasab, a Pakistani national who said he belonged to the militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba, was found guilty on more than 80 charges in May 2010, including murder and waging war on India, and was sentenced to death by hanging.

He was filmed walking through Mumbai's main train station carrying an AK-47 and a knapsack on his back during an attack in which nearly 60 people were gunned down.

It was part of a series of coordinated strikes on key landmarks in the city, including luxury hotels and a Jewish centre.

The three-day rampage led to an increase in tension between India and its nuclear-armed neighbor Pakistan, causing a temporary suspension of peace talks.

Suspected ineligible Colo. voters to learn status

DENVER (AP) ? People who received letters questioning their citizenship and right to vote will learn Wednesday what steps Colorado election officials plan next in the battleground state where every vote can be critical in close races.

Some of the nearly 4,000 letters sent by Republican Secretary of State Scott Gessler actually went to U.S. citizens, although it's unknown how many. And more than three-quarters went to Democrats and independent voters.

Democrats have criticized the effort and said it can disenfranchise legal voters or make it difficult to exercise their right to vote. Critics also questioned Gessler's political motivations in a year where both major parties see Colorado as key to winning the presidential election. Control of the state Legislature and competitive congressional races are also at stake.

President Barack Obama won Colorado in 2008 by nearly 9 percentage points, the first time a Democrat won the state since Bill Clinton in 1992.

Charmaine Rose, 36, a Canadian immigrant from Toronto who became naturalized in March, is among those who received a letter.

"Well, I was shocked and angry and worried I guess that the first time I get to vote wouldn't happen. I was worried that my vote wouldn't count," she said.

Rose has responded to the letter by sending her naturalization number, but she said she worries her status will continue to be questioned.

"People born here don't have to go through this. I don't think that I should either. I am a U.S. citizen," she said.

A total of 1,566 letters went to Democrats and 1,794 went to unaffiliated voters. Another 486 letters were sent to Republicans.

The American Civil Liberties Union in Colorado said at least 25 eligible voters who got the letters have contacted the organization and the number is growing. The letters ask voters to voluntarily withdraw their registration or affirm they're eligible voters.

"Really, his letter in my mind, is intimidating," said Denise Maes, ACLU public policy director. She said registered voters who received it are "worried that they did something wrong and that their paperwork is not in order."

A public meeting was planned Wednesday on questions surrounding Gessler's plan and how the state should proceed with those who have not responded.

Republican have aggressively pursued initiatives to verify voters' citizenship, particularly in swing states, much to the ire of Democrats who worry that key parts of their base ? Latinos and seniors ? are likely to be disenfranchised.

Election chiefs in Iowa, Michigan, New Mexico and Ohio ? all expected to be competitive in November ? joined Colorado and other states asking the federal government for access to a database to verify citizenship. Colorado got access to the database last week.

Gessler sent letters to people he suspects are non-citizens but appear on voter rolls. Using information from the department of motor vehicles, Gessler identified people who once presented documents showing they were not citizens, such as a green card, when applying for a driver's license. It's unclear whether those people registered to vote by accident while getting a driver's license or when approached by someone as part of registration drive.

Rich Coolidge, a Gessler spokesman, said immigrants sometimes are unaware that they're breaking the law.

"They could've been grocery shopping and somebody said, 'Hey you got a driver's license? Yeah, I got a driver's license. Great, come here and fill this out,'" he said.

Gessler said some people have responded to affirm their citizenship or to withdraw their status. His office plans to release those figures Thursday.

Gessler denies any political motivation and insists his goal is to maintain accurate voter rolls. His office said it did not look at party registration when sending the letters.

"As the state's chief election official, he is obligated to make sure that only eligible voters are casting ballots," Coolidge said. "We identified a vulnerability in the system, we identified people who exploited, or accidentally exploited that vulnerability, and we're going to shut down that loophole."

Gessler's office provided The Associated Press with the party affiliation of people who received the letters but denied a request to see their names, citing an ongoing investigation. Some county clerks have said they don't want to have a list of suspected ineligible voters because they fear those people would be harassed if the names become public.

Coolidge said 1,500 of the people who got letters have previously voted. But election officials have been unable to determine whether they registered and voted after becoming citizens. Gessler said the federal database ? known as the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements ? will allow his office to verify which registered voters are now U.S. citizens.

Democrats and voting advocacy groups have dismissed Gessler's assertion that ineligible voters have cast ballots and insist he has shown no proof of widespread fraud.

Bendy battery lets you wear gadgets' power supply

BATTERIES are going round the bend. A flexible, lithium-ion battery can fit inside the cable for your earphones so you can wear it round your neck.

Developed by a team at Pusan National University in South Korea, the battery is made from electrode strands coiled into a hollow core and surrounded by an outer electrode tube. It could make future gadgets lighter because they will no longer need an integrated battery. Flexible displays or wearable electronics will be less bulky too. It might mean you can wear your power source on the wrist, round your neck or any another part of the body, its creators say.

In tests, a prototype continuously operated a red LED screen and iPod Shuffle even when researchers tied the battery in a knot. Je Young Kim of Korean firm LG Chem and a co-creator of the device, says the battery can power a small MP3 player for up to 10 hours and provide 5 minutes of emergency calls from a cellphone (Journal of Advanced Materials, doi.org/fz5rg5).

The team's goal is to have the battery ready for mass production by 2017, for use in MP3 players or as emergency back-up power for cellphones. "This may be the first cornerstone of the wearable energy era," says Kim.

Editor: Judge 'throws the book' at UK media

LONDON (AP) ? The editor of a U.K. newspaper says he fears that the senior judge tasked with investigating Britain's scandal-tarred press is preparing to deliver a scathing indictment of the industry.

The Independent's Chris Blackhurst told BBC radio that documents he'd recently received from Lord Justice Brian Leveson were so harshly worded he was shocked.

Leveson was charged with investigating Britain's media in the wake of the phone hacking scandal, which exposed widespread illegal behavior across the industry.

The judge has promised to give confidential warnings to anyone he might criticize in his final report. Leveson's recommendations aren't binding but will likely have a major impact on Britain's media landscape.

No date is set for the report's release, but Blackhurst said Wednesday the warning he'd seen "throws the book at the industry."

The smartphone is the PC of tomorrow | ITProPortal.com

In 10 years, tablet computers will be archaic and obsolete. You will look back at the early 2000s, perhaps with an inquisitive child sitting on your knee, and laugh at how you carried a cumbersome, neck-straining, gorilla arm-inducing, larger-than-pocket-size computer around with you. ?It made sense at the time??

Desktops and laptops too, having already begun their slide into outmoded antiquity, will soon be nothing more than dusty cupboard-dwelling relics and museum exhibits.

The one form factor that will remain ? the last and only bastion of consumer computing ? will be the smartphone.

Inevitability

Over the last five years, smartphones have proven that they?re immensely capable. Through the continuing miniaturisation of tech and Moore?s law, smartphones are now approaching the levels of power seen on a desktop or laptop PC. In a few years, everything you do on your laptop today will be achievable on a smartphone. So why continue to use a laptop?

The only real argument for a larger device, such as a laptop or tablet, is the interface. As it stands, the keyboard is still the best way of inputting data, and some activities simply can?t be performed on a 4in smartphone screen. This will change, though.

In just the last few months, thanks in part to efforts made by Apple and Google (and others), voice recognition has finally reached the stage where it can replace keyboard input. Muscle-computer interfaces, infrared keyboards, brain-computer interfaces ? in the next few years, any of these could reach a level of maturity that deprecates conventional keyboards.

The display side of things is no different: Head-up displays (HUDs) like Google Glass, wireless contact lens displays, flexible OLED displays (pictured at the top of this article) and e-ink displays, not to mention bionic eyes all threaten to replace the 70-year-old tradition of a solid, immovable screen being the centrepiece of our interaction with multimedia.

In the next few years, the reasons for keeping a laptop, desktop, or tablet will grow very slim indeed.

Life in the smart lane

For a moment, just think about what it would be like if your smartphone was your only computer. You would always have your computer with you. All of your documents, photos, games, apps, and utilities would always be in your pocket, accessible at any time. If you want to check the time or your messages, just glance down. If you want to watch a TV show on the train, or edit a photo, just flip down your high-resolution HUD.

If everyone carries a smartphone, then the power of ubiquity kicks in. If third parties can assume that everyone carries a smartphone, imagine the potential applications ? it?s effectively the same thing as wearable computing, a dream that has haunted us for decades. You could use your smartphone as a passport, or as a credit card. Your smartphone could track your movements, and then pass the data off to commercial apps, or helpful services like Google Now. With additional sensors, your smartphone could constantly monitor your activity and overall health.

And then there?s my personal favourite: Docking stations. If you do need a large screen, a keyboard and mouse, and some nice speakers, then you can simply plug your smartphone into a docking station. You could have a docking station at home, in the office, at the airport, and they might even be dotted around town. With the high throughput of 60GHz wireless networks, a physical docking station might not even be required.

As a corollary, of course, an atomic computing platform would also give hardware and software makers a laser focus on just one primary form factor. Spurred by increasing power costs, ecology, a worldwide love affair with mobile computing, and very limited battery capacities, we are already seeing a global shift from faster to smaller and more efficient. If smartphones became the singular consumer-oriented computer, this effect would be dramatically magnified. Chip makers would be able to specifically target smartphones. Manufacturers could specialise their production lines and equipment. Software vendors, instead of messily porting programs and games between form factors, could focus on a single form factor and hardware spec.

With an atomic computing platform, smartphones would be cheaper, faster, last longer, and be much more capable than they are today.

The PC will never die

Over the last couple of years I have heralded the death of the PC on numerous occasions. Almost like clockwork, commenters are quick to point out that there are just too many applications where PCs will never be unseated ? especially by a smartphone. Commenters also point out that technology doesn?t die; it dies out, but it very rarely goes extinct.

In a world where smartphones rule supreme, and extra connectivity is provided by docking stations, there really is no hope for the PC. If it helps, you can simply think of a smartphone as a really small PC. In the case of Windows Phone 8, which shares Windows 8?s kernel, it really is a small PC.

This isn?t to say that larger general-purpose computers won?t live on, though. At least for the foreseeable future, there will be limits to just how much processing power you can squeeze into a smartphone ? and there will always be people who need or want faster computers to speed up their workflow.

Instead of desktop PCs, though, I think this gap will be filled by cloud computing. Within 10 years, most of the world will be blanketed with high-speed mobile networks such as LTE. At some point in the future, as mobile data throughput and latency improves, the cloud will simply become another resource ? another processor core ? that smartphones can tap into. Photoshop, for example, would perform lightweight edits locally ? but the moment you do anything complex, the cloud would kick in. Likewise, the cloud could be leveraged to bridge the gap between mobile and desktop graphics.

If technology has taught us anything, though, it?s that a time will come when chip making processes are so advanced that the SoC in your smartphone is 10 (or 100) times the speed of today?s CPUs and GPUs. Eventually, you won?t need the cloud as a crutch, or a desktop PC that you wheel out whenever you need to do some 3D modelling. Eventually, it will seem completely unfathomable that computing once consisted of sitting in front of a variety of large beige/black/silver cuboids. Heck, eventually, anything more than a brain-implanted interface will seem clunky.

Trust me, in a few years, when you have a single, pocketable computer that can do just about anything ? from streaming movies, to making contactless payments, to playing the latest version of Crysis ? you will wonder why you ever thought that tablets or ultrabooks would be the next big thing.

More OnLive management moves, Perlman out as investor Lauder settles for Chairman

As the OnLive storm continues to ride itself out, details of who the winners and losers are (mainly losers) keep washing up on the shore. Today's casualty seems to be CEO Steve Perlman himself, who -- just days after the firm reinventing itself -- is "departing to work on his myriad of other projects." In his place the former COO, Charlie Jablonski, is temporarily taking the reins, as well as continuing his role as head of operations in the new organization. Finally, completing this wave of announcements, is the news that chief investor, Gary lauder, will officially take the title of Chairman. So, as the new incarnation settles into its new structure, we'll just have to sit tight, waiting to see what the next chapter in the OnLive story is.

Kansas Charity Executive Charged With $2-Million in Medicaid Fraud

The former chief financial officer of a Kansas health-care organization has been charged with siphoning more than $2-million in Medicaid money from the organization, The Topeka Capital-Journal writes.

Federal prosecutors claim that Jason Sellers, 43, of Lyndon, Kan., diverted Medicaid payments to Kansas Health Solutions, a nonprofit group contracted by the state to administer mental-health services, to a shell consulting company he created.

According to a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court last week, the firm, Advanced Business Consulting, fraudulently billed the charity for information-technology services. Mr. Sellers allegedly also billed Kansas Health Solutions for sports gear and uniforms for teams with which he was involved, computer equipment for a school, and personal funds.

Mr. Sellers, who left Kansas Health Solutions in August 2011 amid a state probe of the alleged theft, was charged with a single count of wire fraud and faces up to 20 years in prison. The article did not include a comment from him.

Lance Armstrong's Lessons For Small Business

USA Today:

I am not sure what is more amazing -

? That Lance Armstrong was banned for life and is about to be stripped of his 7 Tour De France championships, or
? That Armstrong decided to drop all challenges against the allegations that he doped during his unprecedented run, or
? That his sponsor, Nike, decided to stick by Armstrong.

While all three developments are fairly remarkable, if you know anything about Nike, you know that, like Loretta Lynn, they stand by their man, and therein lay a good lesson for smaller businesses.

A region-by-region look at Hurricane Irene's toll

Hurricane Irene and its remnants raked the Caribbean, the eastern U.S. and Canada for more than a week a year ago. Though it never hit the U.S. as anything stronger than a minimal hurricane, it killed at least 67 people in all and ranks as the costliest Category 1 storm on record since at least 1980. It caused an estimated $15.8 billion in total damage.

Below is a look at Irene's toll, region by region, in the order the storm hit, based on official statistics, private estimates and Associated Press reports. Power outage figures are per customer, which is defined as one home or business.

State-by-state damage figures are estimates; they do not add up to $15.8 billion because many states do not calculate some losses, such as uninsured property damage.

CARIBBEAN:

Deaths: 8

Damage: At least $370 million

Power outages: Millions

The Caribbean fared better than initially feared because the worst of the storm missed major population centers. But hundreds of homes were damaged on Puerto Rico, the British Virgin Islands, the Dominican Republic and the Bahamas. Lightning sparked a fire that burned a house owned by billionaire Richard Branson in the British Virgin Islands; guests inside at the time included actress Kate Winslet. No one was injured.

FLORIDA:

Deaths: 2

Damage: Negligible

Power outages: None

Irene threatened Florida's Atlantic coast but then veered north and missed the state. Still, the storm brought some rain and heavy surf. A teacher and a tourist died in rough waters off New Smyrna Beach. Waves also damaged sea turtle nests along the central coast.

SOUTH CAROLINA

Deaths: None

Damage: At least $5 million

Power outages: 8,000

Irene brushed the coast, snapping tree limbs and flooding streets in beach towns. The worst damage was to beaches, with erosion reported along the central coast.

NORTH CAROLINA

Deaths: 7

Damage: At least $1.2 billion

Power outages: 660,000

The center of Irene made its first U.S. landfall as a Category 1 hurricane near Cape Lookout on the Outer Banks, a series of barrier islands. The storm cut a breach through Hatteras Island, resulting in the construction of a temporary bridge.

VIRGINIA:

Deaths: 5

Damage: At least $182 million

Power outages: 1.1 million

While Irene struck Virginia's southeastern coast and caused minor flooding and wind damage, the storm's effects were most severe farther inland, closer to the area around the state capital, Richmond. Strong winds knocked down trees and caused the second-largest power outage in state history. Thousands of homes were damaged. More than 200 roads had to be closed.

WASHINGTON, D.C.

Deaths: None

Damage: At least $15 million

Power outages: More than 38,000

Some water leaked inside the Washington Monument, which had been damaged by an earthquake less than a week earlier. Hundreds of trees fell in the nation's capital, some onto homes. "We fared much better than we could have," Mayor Vincent Gray said.

MARYLAND

Deaths: 3

Damage: At least $518.2 million

Power outages: 750,000

Irene forced the evacuation of Ocean City, but the coastal resort town avoided serious damage. A nuclear reactor was knocked offline by an automatic shutdown when siding blew into a transformer. Trees smashed into roofs of homes in the town of Hollywood. Long delays in restoring power helped lead Gov. Martin O'Malley to order a study to find ways to improve electricity distribution.

DELAWARE

Deaths: 2

Damage: $43.2 million

Power outages: At least 119,000

A tornado damaged several homes in southern Delaware. Beaches were slightly damaged, and an access road through a wildlife refuge was washed out.

PENNSYLVANIA

Deaths: 6

Damage: $58 million

Power outages: 1.3 million

Irene's high winds and heavy rains uprooted trees, flooded creeks and rivers and caused widespread power outages across the eastern half of Pennsylvania. Three of the six deaths blamed on the hurricane resulted from falling trees. Recovery efforts were hampered by the remnants of Tropical Storm Lee, which struck the state less than two weeks later.

NEW JERSEY

Deaths: 11

Damage: $1 billion

Power outages: 2 million

Irene's center made its second U.S. landfall near Atlantic City with tropical storm-strength winds of 69 mph ? 5 mph slower than needed for hurricane status. Yet it dumped as much as 10 inches of rain and caused record flooding in northern parts of the state. Many homes were damaged or destroyed, and thousands of people were displaced.

NEW YORK

Deaths: 10

Damage: More than $1.3 billion

Power outages: 1.1 million

Irene's eye made its third U.S. landfall in Brooklyn but did not materialize into the big-city disaster many had feared. The city had shut down its subway system for the first time in history and evacuated thousands of coastal residents. Only minor flooding was reported. But inland, the storm caused severe flooding that closed hundreds of roads and bridges. Tourist destinations in the Catskill and Adirondack mountains lost millions of dollars in revenue over the summer as they sought to repair damage to trees, hillsides and lakes that were drained by demolished dams.

CONNECTICUT

Deaths: 2

Damage: $235 million

Power outages: 830,000

Irene's center made its fourth and final U.S. landfall in Connecticut, hitting with 60 mph winds and drenching rains that destroyed dozens of coastal homes and flooded fields along rivers. Power outages broke a single-event record that had stood since Hurricane Gloria in 1985. The storm led lawmakers to pass legislation intended to improve utility companies' response to storms and prevent large power failures.

RHODE ISLAND

Deaths: None

Damage: $103.7 million

Power outages: 344,000

Long-term power outages were considered the worst effect. Trees blocked roads, but widespread flooding didn't materialize. A state Senate committee called for better communication among the state's emergency management agency, the utility company and local leaders.

MASSACHUSETTS

Deaths: 1

Damage: $194.5 million

Power outages: 786,000

Power lines and trees were taken down, and flooding closed many roads. Repairs to an area ravaged by a rare tornado two months before were hindered. The state's major population center, Boston, was barely afflicted.

VERMONT

Deaths: 6

Damage: $733 million

Power outages: 117,000

Irene's rains caused Vermont's most devastating natural disaster since flooding in 1927. About a dozen communities were cut off, some for days, after raging rivers tore out roads and bridges in the mountainous state. More than 500 miles of roads and dozens of bridges, including many of the state's famous covered bridges, were damaged or destroyed. Thousands of people were displaced. The damage estimate almost equals two-thirds of Vermont's annual general fund budget. Floodwaters coursed through a cemetery and ripped coffins from the ground, strewing remains for miles. A year later, road and bridge repairs are done, but some of the road projects need to be redone eventually because the work was stopgap. Some displaced residents still have not found permanent housing.

NEW HAMPSHIRE

Deaths: 1

Damage: $35 million

Power outages: 175,000

Rain caused major flooding and closed hundreds of roads. Some trails in White Mountain National Forest are still closed; others are being restored.

MAINE

Deaths: 2

Damage: $22.7 million

Power outages: More than 300,000

Lobstermen moved traps, boaters sought safe harbors and Gov. Paul LePage declared a state of emergency as Irene approached. Heavy rain in western Maine washed out two bridges near a popular ski resort.

CANADA

Deaths: 1

Damage: $130 million

Power outages: More than 250,000

Irene crossed into Quebec as a post-tropical storm. Parts of southern Quebec experienced flooding, resulting in road washouts and one death when a culvert collapsed and a vehicle was swept into a river near Montreal. Heavy winds downed trees and knocked out electricity to tens of thousands in Quebec and New Brunswick. At the height of the storm 250,000 were without power in Quebec.

Egypt blocks 120 tunnels in the Sinai: security sources | Morocco ...

CAIRO, Aug 25, 2012 (AFP) -

Egyptian military engineers have blocked 120 tunnels used for smuggling to and from the Gaza Strip since the start of operations in the neighbouring Sinai Pensinsula, security officials said on Saturday.

?Tunnel entrances are being demolished every day and the operation will continue until all underground passageways are shut,? one official told AFP.

No less than 12 tunnels were blocked in the past two days on the Egyptian side, the source said, adding that the most of the tunnels lie in a four-kilometre (2.5 mile) stretch of the border.

Until now, the army has not used explosives or water to plug the tunnels, which are also found in residential areas.

Seven homes sitting on top of tunnel exits were levelled and two massive underground passages used to smuggle cars into the Gaza Strip were sealed, security officials said.

The military sent in tanks and soldiers into the lawless peninsula which neighbours both Gaza and Israel after gunmen killed 16 soldiers in an attack on an army outpost on August 5.

Egypt is also searching for 120 wanted militants and believes around 1,600 extremists, including foreigners, are hiding out in the Sinai, the official MENA news agency reported Wednesday.

Militants wounded three Egyptian policemen in the Sinai last week in an ambush of their vehicle with a rocket propelled grenade, a security official said.

The government has long struggled with militancy and smuggling in the region but unrest has worsened since an uprising overthrew veteran strongman Hosni Mubarak in February last year, prompting the collapse of his discredited police force.

Joelle Sellner | Animation Insider ? "Interviews about Animators by ...

?

YouTube Preview Image

What is your name and current occupation?
Joelle Sellner, freelance animation writer.

What are the crazier jobs you had before getting into animation?
When I was 15, I worked on the assembly line at a sweater factory. I didn?t realize I was illegal child labor, I just thought I had an awesome job where I could buy cheap sweaters. I also worked the night shift at a financial printer on Wall Street where I ordered ?dinner? for investment bankers at 3 AM.

?

What are some of your favorite projects you?re proud to have been a part of?
This year I had the opportunity to write an episode of BEN 10: OMNIVERSE, Cartoon Network?s reboot of the franchise. Everyone involved is so incredibly talented it was an honor to be included. Since most of my writing has been action for boys, I loved writing comedy for girls on Mattel?s MONSTER HIGH webisodes. I also was a writer/story editor on the upcoming SAMURAI! DAYCARE web series for Smosh?s Shut Up! Cartoons channel on YouTube. We all worked hard to make it the first WGA-covered animated series created for the web. And as the only girl on staff, I was proud to write the grossest, most offensive jokes.

?

How did you become interested in animation?
As far back as I can remember, I watched cartoons. I watched them while I was getting ready for school. Then I?d come home and watch them until dinner. If the cable channels had been around then, I probably would?ve stayed up all night watching them. Now I stay up all night writing them. And I still watch an unhealthy amount of TV.

?

Where are you from and how did you get into the animation business?
I grew up in the outer boroughs ofNew York City? Flushing,Queens.Flushingwas some Dutch name the settlers gave it that had nothing to do with indoor plumbing. When I graduated from theUniversityofPennsylvania, I moved back toNew Yorkand wanted to be a TV writer. So I took a film class at NYU where the instructor told me that ?any idiot can write for TV.? That was incentive enough to move to LA, where I started worked as an advertising copywriter (talk about crazy jobs) and started writing spec scripts. My writing partner at the time knew the story editor on MARY-KATE AND ASHLEY IN ACTION, an animated series starring the Olsen Twins. She gave us a shot and we worked on a few more shows together until I went solo.

?

What?s a typical day like for you with regards to your job?
Since I?m freelance, I get to work from home and enjoy a flexible schedule ? or as the elderly man across the street says: ?lazy woman that never works and should get a job filing papers.? Even though it looks like I sit around eating Bon Bons, I actually keep quite busy and try to structure my day. I start the morning by going to the gym, then I send out emails and do other things related to getting my next job(s). After lunch I start my first stretch of writing, and if there are no looming deadlines I?ll go to a networking event in the early evening. At night, I have my longer stretch of writing and worrying why my emails pleading for work are (mostly) going unanswered.

?

What part of your job do you like best? Why?
I always love to watch the finished product for the first time. Unbelievably talented people draw and animate the characters, produce the show and give my words a voice. It blows me away to think these words and thoughts I typed up by myself in my little home office are now being broadcast around the world.

?

What part of your job do you like least? Why?
Pitching. I love to work on original ideas, but I never know what the execs are looking for. Sometimes I do a ton of work on something I?m excited about, only to hear ?We have something exactly like that in development.?

?

What kind of technology do you work with on a daily basis?
I?m fairly low-tech. I have my PC, Word and screenwriting software ? usually some version of Final Draft. If I?m breaking a story, I kick it old school and write on a legal pad with a pen.

?

What is the most difficult part for you about being in the business?
As a freelancer, I always have to ask people for work. Since many friends are story editors in charge of hiring writers, I force myself to ask the dreaded question that puts them in an awkward position. I feel like I should just wear a huge button everywhere I go that says ?Ask me how I can write your show.? But the upside is when friends do hire me, I get to work with people I already like.

?

In your travels, have you had any brushes with animation greatness?
I consider everyone who hires me to be great. I?ve actually been lucky to work for some brilliant story editors and producers: Charlotte Fullerton, Stan Berkowitz, David Slack, Duane Capizzi, Chris Yost, Brandon Sawyer, Audu Paden, Adam Beechen and others.

?

Describe a tough situation you had in life.
My mother passed away when I was 16, leaving me with no family or guardian. I was very fortunate to have a lot of help from my friends and their families. Compared to that, there aren?t any career obstacles I can?t handle.

?

Any side projects you?re working on that you?d like to share details of?
I?m currently writing my first graphic novel, featuring a kickass female heroine.

?

Any unusual talents or hobbies like tying a cherry stem with your tongue or metallurgy?
Hobbies: I collect snow globes. Talents: Bargain shopping. I once found a shirt at Barney?s for four dollars.

?

Is there any advice you can give for an aspiring animation student or artist trying to break into the business?
I can only speak for the writers. If you don?t get the response you want from your scripts, keep writing. And don?t let anyone tell you what you can or cannot do, especially if you?re a woman. If you want to write action animation or comics, as long as you do it well someone will believe in you.

Texas home to many?cities creating the most jobs

AP

Oil used to be king in Odessa, Texas. But now the citiy is diversifying its employment with growth in finnancial services, trade, transportation, utilities, and leisure and hospitality.

By Samuel Weigley, 24/7 Wall St.

The Great Recession has affected nearly every person in the United States. But the recovery has fared better in some parts of the country than others. 24/7 Wall St. looked at the 10 metropolitan areas with the largest employment growth between June 2009, near the peak of the recession, and June 2012.

Of the 10 metros on our list, four are located in Texas. The Lone Star state generally fared better than much of the country during the recession, at least partially because the housing crisis didn?t hit it as hard. Notably, lending standards for mortgages were more strict than in other parts of the country, Alec Friedhoff, a research analyst with the Brookings Institute, told 24/7 Wall St. Texas was also helped by a recent boom in natural gas, creating jobs both directly in the energy sector and indirectly in supporting and related industries such as transportation.

Some of the job growth data should be considered skeptically, especially in smaller metropolitan including some on this list, Milken Institute Senior Economist Armen Bedroussian told 24/7 Wall St. He notes the percentages and the number of people employed or unemployed could fluctuate widely due to the decisions of one company to hire or fire. For instance, in Columbus, Ind., when the area?s largest employer, engine manufacturer Cummins, makes decisions about its employment needs, it affects the entire region.

Throughout the country, certain jobs are growing while others are in decline, especially in the last year. In terms of growth, Friedhoff points to the manufacturing sector making a comeback, helping states such as Michigan. Meanwhile, Bedroussian points to recent growth in the technology sector, which has helped boost employment in Texas cities such as Austin, Dallas and San Antonio.

24/7 Wall St.: America's worst companies to work for

Jobs in industries like? financial services are in decline due to the effects of the European debt crisis, Bedroussian says. Government employment is also down. Due to lower government?revenue and austerity measures, the public sector at both the state and local levels has declined and could continue to do so, especially in services such as education, according to both Friedhoff and Bedroussian.

When looking at the 10 metropolitan areas with the highest percentage of growth in people employed, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed data for 374 metropolitan areas from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. We considered the number and percentage change in the labor force, total employed and unemployed between June 2009 and June 2012, as well as changes on an annual basis during that time, including the past 12 months, to determine if these changes were recent. For the metro areas, we also looked at data from the BLS about the types of jobs people are employed in as of June 2012 and whether the number of employed people has increased or decreased over the past year. We often compared those figures to the state as a whole. It should be noted that for these periods, we looked at the number of employed people, unemployed people, and the labor force, which is the combination of those two groups.

These are the 10 metropolitan areas with the largest increase in employees from June 2009 to June 2012.

1. Odessa, Texas

  • Percent increase of employed:?18.4 percent
  • Increase in people employed:?12,313 (45th highest)
  • June 2009 unemployment rate:?9.6 percent (168th highest)
  • June 2012 unemployment rate:?4.9 percent (15th lowest)

The size of the labor force has grown dramatically in Odessa since 2009, when it was comprised of just 71,771 people. Since 2009, the labor force has grown to 83,424, an increase of 16.2 percent, and the largest increase of all metropolitan areas measured. The growth in employment has been spread across a number of industries, many of which have seen double-digit year-over-year growth in the past year, including in financial service, trade, transportation, utilities, and leisure and hospitality. ?In the past year, the unemployment rate dropped 49 percent, the third largest drop of all metro areas measured.

24/7 Wall St.: America's oldest brands

2. Columbus, Ind.

  • Percent increase of employed:?14.5 percent
  • Increase in people employed:?5,066 (98th highest)
  • June 2009 unemployment rate:?10.7 percent (111th highest)
  • June 2012 unemployment rate:?6.3 percent (59th lowest)

The labor force of the Columbus metro area has increased by 9.2 percent from June 2009 to June 2012, the fifth-largest increase of all metropolitan areas. In the last year alone, the labor force has grown 5.9 percent, while the percentage of people employed grew by 7.4 percent, the?biggest increase of all but three metro areas. Manufacturing, the largest employment sector in Columbus, has grown measurably in the past year. Columbus is the home of engine manufacturer Cummins, which has been adding jobs over the last year and will continue to do so as the demand for its products remains high. Meanwhile, employment in the leisure and entertainment sectors rose 13.9 percent in the same period.

24/7 Wall St.: States that get the most federal money

3. Midland, Texas

  • Percent increase of employed:?11.2 percent
  • Increase in people employed:?8,265 (69th highest)
  • June 2009 unemployment rate:?6.6 percent (36th lowest)
  • June 2012 unemployment rate:?4.3 percent (7th lowest)

The unemployment rate in Midland never reached high national numbers. The June 2009 unemployment rate of 6.6 percent was well below the 9.5 percent in the U.S. And the employment situation continued to improve in the years that followed. In June 2012, the Midland metropolitan area had 85,904 people in the labor force, up 14 percent from the 75,284 people in the force back in June 2009 -- the largest percent increase of all metropolitan areas except for Odessa. The mining, logging and construction industry, the largest employment sector in Midland with approximately 19,900 employees as of June 2012, added 7.6 percent more jobs from a year earlier. This was actually less than Texas as a whole, where the number of jobs in the industry has grown by 12.6 percent from last year. ?The major down spot for employment in Midland is the government sector, which has declined 8.2 percent from June 2011 to June 2012.

4. Gainesville, Ga.

  • Percent increase of employed:?10.6 percent
  • Increase in people employed:?8,437(68th highest)
  • June 2009 unemployment rate:?9.8 percent (161st highest)
  • June 2012 unemployment rate:?7.5 percent (136th lowest)

Between June 2009 and June 2012, the number of people employed in the Gainesville metropolitan area increased by 10.6 percent, one of only four metropolitan areas out of 374 to see an increase of more than 10 percent in those three years. The labor force as a whole increased by 6.8 percent during this time, the 12th largest increase of all metro areas. While the number of people employed increased by 8,437, the number of people unemployed decreased by 1,611. The number of people in non-farm jobs was roughly 80,500 as of June 2012, according to the BLS. This was an increase of 8.1 percent from the year-ago period.

5. Blacksburg-Christiansburg-Radford, Va.?

  • Percent increase of employed:?9.9 percent
  • Increase in people employed:?7,089 (82nd highest)
  • June 2009 unemployment rate:?9.6 percent (168th highest)
  • June 2012 unemployment rate:?7.0 percent (95th lowest)

While the labor force didn?t grow as much in Blacksburg-Christiansburg-Radford as much as it did in other places such as Lafayette or Laredo in the past three years, it did increase by a solid 5.9 percent from June 2011 to June 2012, the 18th highest out of 374 metro areas. In the last year, Volvo has brought 700 employees back to its plant in the metro area following recent surges in North American sales. Blacksburg has also added government jobs at a much faster clip than the state of Virginia as a whole. Government workers comprised 22,800 employees as of June 2012, up 5.6 percent compared to a year ago. Meanwhile, Virginia?s government sector jobs have barely increased at all in the last year.

Richard Branson's My London

Where do you stay in London?

I have a home in Oxfordshire, but when I?m in town I tend to stay with my children, Holly and Sam, who both live in W11.

Best place for a nightcap?

I wouldn?t go anywhere in particular. I?d just head to Notting Hill and find a nice pub

Advice for a tourist?

London is one of the most exciting cities in the world with so many fantastic pubs and restaurants. I would urge people to get out there and see as much as possible.

Best meal ever?

I always enjoy dinner at the family-run Greek restaurant Halepi in Bayswater.

Do you collect anything?

I seem to collect companies. I start a lot of them because I just can?t resist a new challenge.

Building you?d most like to live in?

British Airways HQ, as long as all the take-off and landing slots at Heathrow would come with it.

What would you do as Mayor for a day?

Grass over about two-thirds of the city so the streets became places for kids to play and London was a collection of lots of little villages and not dominated by cars.

Where do you go to let your hair down?

The Roof Gardens in Kensington. It?s a beautiful venue with a great restaurant and wonderful views across the city. Plus, it has flamingoes, which I happen to love. In fact, I breed them on Necker Island.?

Biggest extravagance?

Owning your own Caribbean island is rather extravagant, isn?t it? I bought Necker Island for ?60,000 30 years ago and it?s given me so many happy memories, including Holly?s wedding earlier this year. We often have family and friends coming to visit.?

Animal you?d most like to be?

I?d be a tiger, even though they?re critically endangered. They?re the most extraordinary creatures. I went to India in the hope of seeing one but didn?t succeed.

Last album you bought?

I haven?t bought an album for a long time but I?m a big fan of Peter Gabriel and listen to his music a lot. He's also a good friend of mine. I saw him a few nights ago.

At the moment you are?

Concentrating on Virgin Atlantic?s new routes. We?ve just started flying to Cancun, which is the most amazing place, and we?re hoping to launch flights to Moscow next year.

Who?s your hero?

I absolutely love Archbishop Desmond Tutu. I know him quite well and he?s set such a great example with the work he?s done in South Africa. He?s taught us to forgive our enemies, which is important. He also has a wonderful sense of humour.

Earliest London memory?

I moved into a nice houseboat in Little Venice when I was 15 years old. I found a girlfriend called Monday and a houseboat called Friday, so I had the week sewn up.

Ever had a run-in with a London policeman?

Yes, but not for many years. When the Sex Pistols released the ?God Save The Queen? single on Virgin Records 25 years ago, we celebrated by going along the Thames on a barge and the police decided to interrupt the party.

Last three places you went on holiday?

I recently visited Madagascar, where I went walking in the rainforest to see the lemurs. From there, I went on safari in Ulusaba, my private game reserve in South Africa, and after that I swam with whale sharks off the coast of Mexico. They?re the biggest fish in the ocean with mouths up to five feet wide, but they?re gentle giants. I nearly swam right into one?s mouth.
