More serious earthquakes predicted in the Himalayas

Dec. 28, 2012 ? A research team led by scientists from Nanyang Technological University (NTU) has discovered that massive earthquakes in the range of 8 to 8.5 magnitudes on the Richter scale have left clear ground scars in the central Himalayas.

This ground-breaking discovery has huge implications for the area along the front of the Himalayan Mountains, given that the region has a population density similar to that of New York City.

NTU Professor Paul Tapponnier, who is recognised as a leading scientist in the field of neotectonics, said that the existence of such devastating quakes in the past means that quakes of the same magnitude could happen again in the region in future, especially in areas which have yet to have their surface broken by a temblor.

Published recently in Nature Geosciences, the study by NTU's Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) in Singapore and colleagues in Nepal and France, showed that in 1255 and 1934, two great earthquakes ruptured the surface of the earth in the Himalayas. This runs contrary to what scientists have previously thought.

Massive earthquakes are not unknown in the Himalayas, as quakes in 1897, 1905, 1934 and 1950 all had magnitudes between 7.8 and 8.9, each causing tremendous damage. But they were previously thought not to have broken the earth's surface -- classified as blind quakes -- which are much more difficult to track.

However, Prof Tapponnier said that by combining new high resolution imagery and state of the art dating techniques, they could show that the 1934 earthquake did indeed rupture the surface, breaking the ground over a length of more than 150 kilometres, essentially south of the part of the range that harbours Mt Everest.

This break formed along the main fault in Nepal that currently marks the boundary between the Indian and Asian tectonic plates -- also known as the Main Frontal Thrust (MFT) fault.

Using radiocarbon dating of offset river sediments and collapsed hill-slope deposits, the research team managed to separate several episodes of tectonic movement on this major fault and pin the dates of the two quakes, about 7 centuries apart.

"The significance of this finding is that earthquakes of magnitude 8 to 8.5 may return at most twice per millennium on this stretch of the fault, which allows for a better assessment of the risk they pose to the surrounding communities," said Prof Tapponnier.

Prof Tapponnier warns that the long interval between the two recently discovered earthquake ruptures does not mean people should be complacent, thinking that there is still time before the next major earthquake happens in the region.

"This does not imply that the next mega-earthquake in the Himalayas will occur many centuries from now because we still do not know enough about adjacent segments of the MFT Mega-thrust," Prof Tapponier explains.

"But it does suggest that areas west or east of the 1934 Nepal ground rupture are now at greater risk of a major earthquake, since there are little or no records of when last earth shattering temblor happened in those two areas."

The next step for Prof Tapponnier and his EOS scientists is to uncover the full extent of such fault ruptures, which will then allow them to build a more comprehensive model of earthquake hazard along the Himalayan front.

World's longest high-speed rail line opens connecting Beijing with southern China

BEIJING, China - China has opened the world's longest high-speed rail line, which more than halves the time required to travel from the country's capital in the north to Guangzhou, an economic hub in southern China.

Wednesday's opening of the 2,298 kilometre (1,428 mile)-line was commemorated by the 9 a.m. departure of a train from Beijing for Guangzhou. Another train left Guangzhou for Beijing an hour later.

China has massive resources and considerable prestige invested in its showcase high-speed railways program.

But it has in recent months faced high-profile problems: part of a line collapsed in central China after heavy rains in March, while a bullet train crash in the summer of 2011 killed 40 people. The former railway minister, who spearheaded the bullet train's construction, and the ministry's chief engineer, were detained in an unrelated corruption investigation months before the crash.

Trains on the latest high-speed line will initially run at 300 kph (186 mph) with a total travel time of about eight hours. Before, the fastest time between the two cities by train was more than 20 hours.

The line also makes stops in major cities along the way, including provincial capitals Shijiazhuang, Wuhan and Changsha.

More than 150 pairs of high-speed trains will run on the new line every day, the official Xinhua News Agency said, citing the Ministry of Railways.

Rail is an essential part in China's transportation system, and the government plans to build a grid of high-speed railways with four east-west lines and four north-south lines by 2020.

The opening of the new line brings the total distance covered by China's high-speed railway system to more than 9,300 km (5,800 miles) ? about half its 2015 target of 18,000 km.

E-books: Latest Mode Of Conducting Web Promotions | Home ...

There are many methods of promoting your products or services via internet marketing. It has been witnessed that there are a few methods which correctly followed can reap good results but then apart from them there are others too which have the ability to provide profits. Creating e-books and releasing it on web to promote your organization is one of the processes of internet marketing. If done correctly then this method is considered as most effective method and it ensures good returns to your organization.

In order to conduct successful ebook marketing make sure that you are aware with what is demanded by the online audiences about the product you are dealing in. It is necessary to carry out a survey in order to go through the likes and dislikes of the users. Keep in mind all the significant aspects to ensure that your e-book will be popular in web world. If you make an e-book which is excellent but the online users does not have any interest in the subject; such a book will not win the audiences. Another option which is available is by submitting few articles related to your market online, if the option of research does not suit you in any way. By means of such a method you will get certain amount of people visiting you webpage; this will help in determining the requirement of your product by the people.

At the end of this activity when you have the results about which niche you want to write for you can go ahead. It is important that you first prepare a content chart which will give you a clear idea of formatting the book and the presentation part of it. If you are capable enough to write it yourself then it is well and good. If it is not possible for you to write it by your own then you can note down certain points and allot the work to an expert writer.

The pictures that you are going to utilize in the book are something you need to concentrate on. The pictures should go with the theme of the e-book and not look kiddish. As it is very easy to understand most of the readers prefer to have images along with the content. It is also important that you have a clue about the different sections where to advertise your products and services.

It is advisable that once the e-book content is planned you pay attention to the final book cover make sure it has some attractive images etc. The major objective of creating this e-book is that you want to have the grip of your users till the time they do not come across your product. Make sure that you check the different factors of the book like the content material and the inbound links in the pages.

Releasing among the public or making it available on the site are some of the options that are available to you. Make a point that people already know about the e-book and avail some offers at the start. You can also create a good credibility for yourself by posting good reviews and comments online. This would enable you to grab attention of more people and you can earn more profits by making your electronic book attainable at minimal costs or as freebies. Maybe one of the most straightforward approaches to getting the best from all you do is something very many people never do ? simple testing. Do not take this lightly because what you can do with click here is more effective than most realize. There are some testing methods that are truly advanced, but even still the most basic type most newbies would have no clue about.

Most online businesses probably jump in with both feet which is something that opens them up to potential disaster. You will need to find a middle ground at least when you are in the early stages, and take action each day bit by bit. How ever you wish to design your tests, and in what manner of delivery is entirely your call.

Any time you want to implement something new and untried on one of your sites, then think about a small scale test on an appropriate page. It is your tracking that is the second component of any kind of testing you decide to do, and hopefully you understand why you must track.

Making Sense of Tragedy ? Newtown, CT | World of Psychology

Making Sense of Tragedy - Newtown, CTAt times like these, we all search for meaning. We all look to make sense of tragedy. We need to put it into some organized containers, because otherwise it just becomes too overwhelming.

This time, the shooting involved not random people in a movie theater, or young adults on a college campus who unfortunately were in the wrong place at the wrong time.

This time, the shooting involved 20 elementary school-aged children. At school. As well as another 6 or 7 adults.

To even begin to wrap your mind around it causes most of us emotional pain and anguish.

In short, how do we make sense of such tragedy?

Making sense of a senseless tragedy of this nature is difficult. In the days to come, we?ll see news organizations trying to piece together the puzzle of Adam Lanza, the alleged shooter. We?ll see people looking for the tell-tale clues of someone about to commit one of the most horrific murders of all time in this country. We?ll see ?experts? and pundits who conclude, without a doubt, that we could?ve prevented this incident, if only X, Y or Z happened.

Gun-control advocates will use the incident to forward their agenda. Gun lobbyists will use the incident to forward their agenda. Nobody will bat an eyelash as they hold their press conferences pushing their political viewpoints. Everything will be carefully scripted and well-choreographed.

And yet, still, none of it will make sense.

Because a tragedy of this proportion can?t fit into any rational container. It is a purely irrational, criminal act that has little explanation. It happens so rarely that, like most random terrorist acts, it cannot be prevented. The signs we would look for from this single individual would do little to help us with the next person ? who will act in a way quite unique to their own upbringing, history, and psyche.

That?s frustrating to most of us, and even adds to the senselessness.

So here?s the container to put this tragedy ? and incidents like it ? into. Some acts that a human being commits bear no resemblance to some of the core things that make us human ? compassion, empathy, an ability to feel, to be selfless, to care, and to look out for others in our community.

The person who committed this act of violence and murder is human. But somewhere along the way, he lost his humanity. He lost the basic social contract we all hold one another to? that we don?t take the enormous gifts we have of our lives, souls, and community, and blow them all up.

Not all things happen for a reason.

?

Our hearts and prayers go out to the families of Newtown, CT.

Physicists make strides in understanding quantum entanglement

Dec. 14, 2012 ? While some theoretical physicists make predictions about astrophysics and the behavior of stars and galaxies, others work in the realm of the very small, which includes quantum physics. Such is the case at UC Santa Barbara, where theoretical physicists at the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics (KITP) cover the range of questions in physics.

Recently, theoretical physicists at KITP have made important strides in studying a concept in quantum physics called quantum entanglement, in which electron spins are entangled with each other. Using computers to calculate the extreme version of quantum entanglement -- how the spin of every electron in certain electronic materials could be entangled with another electron's spin -- the research team found a way to predict this characteristic. Future applications of the research are expected to benefit fields such as information technology.

"Quantum entanglement is a strange and non-intuitive aspect of the quantum theory of matter, which has puzzled and intrigued physicists since the earliest days of the quantum theory," said Leon Balents, senior author of a recent paper on this topic published in the journal Nature Physics. Balents is a professor of physics and a permanent member of KITP.

Quantum entanglement represents the extent to which measurement of one part of a system affects the state of another; for example, measurement of one electron influences the state of another that may be far away, explained Balents. In recent years, scientists have realized that entanglement of electrons is present in varying degrees in solid materials. Taking this notion to the extreme is the "quantum spin liquid," a state of matter in which every electron spin is entangled with another.

Balents said that quantum spin liquids are being sought in experiments on natural and artificial minerals. A key question posed by physicists is how to calculate theoretically which materials are quantum spin liquids. "In our paper, we provide an answer to this question, showing that a precise quantitative measure of 'long-range' entanglement can be calculated for realistic models of electronic materials," said Balents.

"Our results provide a smoking gun signature of this special type of entanglement that determines whether or not a given material is a quantum spin liquid," explained Balents. The results prove that an emblematic example of this type of problem -- material with electron spins residing on the "kagome lattice" -- is indeed a quantum spin liquid, according to Balents. The kagome lattice is a pattern of electron spins named after a type of Japanese fishing basket that this arrangement of spins resembles.

"We expect the technique we developed to have broad applications in the search for these unique quantum states, which in the future may have remarkable applications in information technologies," said Balents.

Shooting victims: 'Hero' teacher, principal, 20 kids

One was a first-grade teacher who reportedly threw herself in front of the gunman to shield her students. Another was a well-liked principal.

Both were among those killed when Adam Lanza, 20, stormed into Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., with guns blazing Friday, killing six adults and 20 children before killing himself.

CLICK HERE for full coverage of the tragedy at the elementary school.

Lanza also killed a seventh adult in the rampage -- his mother, Nancy Lanza. She was killed in her home, shot in the face before her son's assault on the school, sources told ABC News.

Connecticut State Police Lt. Paul Vance said the victims have been formally identified by the state medical examiner. He said a list of the victims' names and birthdates would be released later today.

Vance asked that the privacy of the victims' families be respected.

"I am pleading with you. As you know, this is an extremely heartbreaking, difficult thing to endure," he said.

CLICK HERE for photos from the shooting scene.

The names of a few victims emerged late Friday, including a hero teacher and a devoted principal.

Vicki Soto, 27, one of the adult victims, loved being a teacher, her cousin, Jim Wiltsie, told ABC News' Chris Cuomo Friday. In fact, her first-grade students' safety was such a high priority that Soto reportedly lost her life protecting them.

"The family was informed that she was trying to shield, get her children into a closet and protect them from harm, and by doing that put herself between the gunman and the children," Wiltsie said. "And that's when she was tragically shot and killed.

"I'm very proud to have known Vicki," Wiltsie added. "Her life dream was to be a teacher. And her instincts kicked in when she saw there was harm coming to her students.

"It brings peace to know that Vicki was doing what she loved, protecting the children," he said. "And in our eyes, she is a hero."

The circumstances of Dawn Hochsprung's death are less clear, but those who have spoken have had nice things to say about the Sandy Hook principal.

"When we had our orientation, you could tell she loved her job," Brenda Lediski, a parent, told ABC News by phone.

Hochsprung, 47, only became principal of Sandy Hook in recent years, according to a local news report.

"She was always enthusiastic, always smiling, always game to do anything," Kristin Larson, a former PTA secretary, told the Boston Globe. "When I saw her at the beginning of the school year, she was hugging everyone."

Investigators also hope the one surviving victim, an unidentified school employee who was wounded by the gun man, will be able to help them piece together the tragic events at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

"She is doing fine," Vance said. "[And] she will be instrumental in this investigation."

ABC News' George Stephanopoulos, Dan Harris and Lauren Effron contributed to this report.

Bomber kills American near Afghan base after Panetta visit

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (Reuters) - A suicide bomber killed one American service member and wounded three other U.S. troops outside a base in southern Afghanistan on Thursday shortly after a visit there by U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, officials said.

Panetta dismissed the attack as a desperate and futile attempt by insurgents to sow chaos in Afghanistan.

He announced that Afghan President Hamid Karzai would head to the United States in the week of Jan 7. for talks with President Barack Obama on the future the U.S. presence in Afghanistan after the NATO-led mission ends in 2014.

But the attack, which was reported to have wounded more than a dozen Afghans, was a reminder of how insurgent violence is still adding to the death toll in the 11-year war -- even as the United States and its allies prepare to hand over security to the Afghans.

"That was the type of attack that we've seen throughout the country," Panetta said. "This is what they resort to in order to try to continue to try to stimulate chaos in this country. They will not be successful at doing that."

Panetta traveled to Afghanistan in part to firm up options to present to Obama about how many troops to keep in the country once the NATO combat mission ends.

To that end, Panetta said Karzai and Obama would in Washington "discuss a shared vision of Afghanistan beyond 2014," including discussions about residual U.S. troop levels. Panetta did not rule out the possibility that an announcement could be made at that time.

"Ultimately I assume that when they feel it is appropriate, that (the size of the residual U.S. force) will be revealed to not only the American people, but the Afghan people as well," Panetta said, flanked by Karzai at a news conference in Kabul.

Obama campaigned for re-election partly on a promise to wind down the war in Afghanistan. One U.S. official has told Reuters that options under consideration included keeping as few as 6,000 troops in Afghanistan, compared to 68,000 now.

BLOOD SPILLED

At the start of their private meeting at Karzai's palace in Kabul, the president asked Panetta about the attack at Kandahar Airfield and whether the insurgents knew he was visiting the base. Panetta responded that the attack was on the outskirts of the base after he was gone.

The suicide car bomber rammed into an armored vehicle at approximately 5:15 p.m. around the perimeter of Kandahar Airfield, in the country's south. Just hours earlier, Panetta had praised U.S. troops there for their sacrifice and noted the death toll from the Afghan conflict.

"We've spilled a lot of blood here -- all of you have spilled a lot of blood... Over 2,000...have been killed in action here," he said.

"But the bottom line is that those sacrifices, all of those sacrifices are not in vain. We have made good progress in achieving the mission that we have embarked upon -- and it's because of you."

A trip by Panetta to Afghanistan in March was overshadowed by an attack on his welcoming party by an Afghan translator, who drove a stolen vehicle onto the runway ramp. At some point the man set himself on fire in a failed attempt to detonate the vehicle and died of his injuries.

U.S. military commanders, briefing media traveling with Panetta this week, have praised the growing capabilities of the Afghan Army and, after a rapid buildup in its troop levels, suggested Afghan forces would be able to be able to secure the country once most foreign troops depart.

U.S. Major General Lawrence Nicholson, who runs day-to-day operations for the NATO-led mission in Afghanistan, said on Wednesday that Afghan forces would not be perfect in 2015 but would be up to the job, with very limited U.S. support.

At Kandahar Airfield, the top NATO commander of the southern region of Afghanistan said he would need fewer troops there next year because of security gains and the growing capability of the Afghans.

"I fully expect by next summer we will have less ISAF forces here -- because we'll need less ISAF forces," Major General Robert Abrams said.

Six Ideas for Small Business Marketing - Small Business Blog from ...

Too many small-business owners think marketing is like a trip to the doctors ? something you have to do when something?s not going quite right.

But marketing is not the remedy, but the solution in the first place. When marketing is continuous and targeted rather than occasional and generic, business gets easier. If your reputation is positive, then much of your marketing will take care of itself.

Here are six ideas for helping small businesses ? on the cheap.

1. Take steps to make customers feel special. Customers respond to being recognised. Even if you are a web-based company, customer service is very possible. Send a ?Thank You? note, or offer something when sending products. Customers who feel special will come back.

2. Create business cards that prospects keep. Most business cards are tossed within hours of a meeting. Be innovative and creative. Supply a pen or a notepad with your details. Be resourceful.

3. Develop an electronic mailing list and send old-fashioned letters. Revert to old methods to become new? No, we?re not mad. Most businesses have harnessed the power of e-newsletters ? and you definitely should be sending out one, too. It's very cost-effective. But because e-mail marketing is now nearly ubiquitous, you can quickly stand out by occasionally sending personal, surface mail letters to customers and prospects. The process is?simplified by creating a letter template and envelope or customer label mailing list in Microsoft Office Word in Office 2010, which you can print out. The mailing list is easily created in Excel and then imported into Word.

4. Boost your profile at trade shows and conferences. You can quickly create signage, glossy postcards with your contact information, product news inserts or an event mini Web site ? all with Microsoft Office Publisher. Check out its versatile features.

5. Become an online expert. A previous blog ?How to become an online influencer??sums this one up rather nicely. By working hard at it, it will show great rewards. Finding those in your industry, and how to react to them is key. Find these people out and interact with them and let them do your marketing.

6. Finally, don't let customers simply slip away. Make an effort to reel them back in ? manage them efficiently. Make sure you do not lose contact with a customer. Build a database, send them a personalised email and inquire whether all is well. Customer Relationship Management tools can help with this process. It costs a lot less to retain a disgruntled or inactive customer than to acquire a new one.

Pacquiao Family Wants Him To Retire - Business Insider

Manny Pacquiao went down in a heap on Saturday, after Juan Manuel Marquez landed a powerful right hand during the sixth round of the boxers' bout.

It was one of the more frightening and stunning moments of Pacquiao's boxing career and has many questioning whether the Pacman should hang up his gloves.

Pacquiao's wife Jinkee was visibly shaken by the result of the fight during an interview with the pair on the GMA Network in the Philippines. She also offered a somber plea for her husband to retire after she was asked whether she thought Pacquiao should continue boxing.

?You know the answer to that," Jinkee said. "He knows what I am asking him.?

His mother expressed the same sentiment earlier that same day.

It's understandable for both Jinkee and Pacquiao's mom to feel this way after the rare blow Pacquiao took on Saturday. Moments like Marquez's knockout punch are especially agonizing and upsetting for loved ones.

But does Pacquiao owe it to the Philippines to continue boxing, or does he have anything more to accomplish? Former boxing champion Ricky Hatton doesn't think so. (via Radio Netherlands Worldwide)

"What's he (Pacquiao) going to achieve by having one more fight? Probably nothing. He's an eight-weight world champion. There's nothing more to be said.

"You'd like to see him go into retirement and spend some time with his family and be happy. He can't do any more from a boxing point of view."

It's hard to fathom the best pound-for-pound boxer ever go out with an ending that is below the standards he has held for himself. Pacquiao has titles in eight different divisions, but is currently without belt and has lost two fights in a row.

You can't fault Pacquiao if he chooses to get on the mat and fight another match, but his legacy won't be tarnished if he chooses to stop either.

Pacquiao has a difficult decision in front of him.

Inevitable: Oppo Find 5 meets Xiaomi Phone 2 and Meizu MX2

Oppo Find 5, Xiaomi Phone 2 and Meizu MX2

With all three major Chinese phone makers now showing their quad-core cards, it's only natural for us to take a friendly portrait of their latest flagships: from left to right we have the Meizu MX2 (due December 19th), the Xiaomi Phone 2 (already out) and the freshly announced Oppo Find 5 (due January). At 8.86mm thick, the Find 5 is subtly slimmer than our two other 10.2mm-thick phones when compared visually, but the five-inch 1080p screen is clearly a winner in terms of size and pixel density -- the latter is made more obvious by the fine details on the tactfully designed icons; just too bad you won't be able to fit much 1080p video content into the 16GB built-in storage. As for aesthetics, we're currently leaning towards the Find 5 for its less obvious bezel around the glass panel, and the phone's shape is also a nice change from the usual rectangle-with-evenly-rounded-corners form factor. Still, the feel and contour of the Meizu MX2's crystal back cover gave the most comfortable grip out of the three, only to be hampered by the Flyme OS' eccentric UX. Obviously, we shall do a more detailed comparison once we have our review unit, so stay tuned.

Polar ice melt accelerates (+video)

The Earth's ice sheets are melting three times faster than they were two decades ago, 47 researchers say in a recently published study. The scientists fault human-created global warming for the dramatic increase in melting.

By Seth Borenstein,?Associated Press / November 29, 2012

Fueled by global warming,?polar?ice?sheets in Greenland and Antarctica are now melting three times faster than they did in the 1990s, a new scientific study says.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

So far, that's only added about half an inch (1.3 centimeters) to rising sea levels, not as bad as some earlier worst case scenarios. But the melting's quicker pace, especially in Greenland, has?ice?scientists worried.

One of the biggest wild cards in climate change has been figuring out how much the melting of the massive sheets of?ice?at the two poles would add to the seas. Until now, researchers haven't agreed on how fast the mile-thick sheets are thawing ? and if Antarctica was even losing?ice.

The new research concludes that Antarctica is melting, but points to the smaller?ice?sheet in Greenland, which covers most of the island, as the bigger and more pressing issue. Its melt rate has grown from about 55 billion tons a year in the 1990s to almost 290 billion tons a year recently, according to the study.

"Greenland is really taking off," said National Snow and?Ice?Data Center scientist Ted Scambos, a co-author of the paper released Thursday by the journal Science.

Study lead author Andrew Shepherd of the University of Leeds in England, said their results provide a message for negotiators in Doha, Qatar, who are working on an international agreement to fight global warming: "It's very clear now that Greenland is a problem."

Scientists blame man-made global warming for the melting. Burning fossil fuels, such as coal and oil, emits carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases that trap heat, warming the atmosphere and oceans. Bit-by-bit, that erodes the?ice?sheets from above and below. Snowfall replenishes the?ice?sheets, but hasn't kept pace with the rate of melting.

Because the world's oceans are so big, it takes a lot of?ice?melting ? about 10 trillion tons ? to raise sea levels 1 inch (2.5 centimeters). Since 1992,?ice?sheets at the poles have lost nearly 5 trillion tons of?ice, the study says, raising sea levels by about a half inch.

That seemingly tiny extra bit probably worsened the flooding from an already devastating Superstorm Sandy last month, said NASA?ice?scientist Erik Ivins, another co-author of the study. He said the extra weight gives each wave a little more energy.

Summer Camps In The Bay Area

Summer Camps in the Bay Area can be a lot of fun, as long as the camper is mature enough to handle the responsibility and commitment or attending this type of program. The athletes and their parents should talk about the components of Basketball Camps in Los Angeles versus a Bay Area Basketball League or Boys or Girls AAU Basketball Team. Attending this type of program a big decision. Therefore, it is important to be certain that the camper is adequately prepared to meet the challenge. A few of the components that must be discussed include: finances, transportation, amount of time, level of physical energy, and the amount of mental stamina and endurance.
When looking into Summer Camps in the Bay Area, it is important to ask questions about the financial aspect of the program. Since the prices of camps vary, it is wise to get information about this and compare to other camps. Parents need to discuss the finances with their children and make sure that the child understands that once the camp is paid for their are no returns. The camper and parents should look into the price of Basketball Camps in Los Angeles versus a Bay Area Basketball League or Boys or Girls AAU Basketball Team. They should think about the fees for the actual program, as well as the expenses of any necessary equipment or clothing that will necessary. Some programs offer need based scholarships which is another thing to look into.
Transportation is something else to think about. Parents who work during the day need to make sure that they can meet the transportation needs whatever they may be. Many parents consider working out a carpooling system with a friend for their son or daughter to share the transportation in order to ease the burden.
Basketball Camps are a time commitment. Whether that commitment consists of one day or weekend session or an overnight workshop for several weeks, the child must be ready to attend all sessions. In order to get the most out of their experience, the athletes need to partake in all of the activities. If they are not able to commit to an everyday camp then they should sign up for a weekend camp or something that only lasts a short period of time. Otherwise, parents are wasting their money if the child is signed up for sessions but is not attending
Some children are not prepared to use as much physical energy that is necessary to partake in these events. Running around all day for many days straight can be exhausting and the children cannot normally sit out of the activities. Since they are expected to participate, they should consult their doctor to be certain that they are in good enough condition to participate.
Lastly, children need to know that camps take mental stamina and endurance. They must know how to find their inner strength to be persistent even when they want to quit and sit out.

Communications Planning for Hurricane Sandy - Hauppauge, NY ...

Whether you?re planning to go to higher ground or hunker down having a communications plan in place today will help you stay connected to those who are most important to you.? As AT&T readies its network ahead of the hurricane, we?re also offering important planning tips for consumers and businesses.

Consumer Tips:

Keep your wireless phone batteries charged at all times. Have an alternative plan to recharge your battery in case of a power outage, such as using your car charger to charge your device or having extra mobile phone batteries on hand.

Keep your wireless phone dry. The biggest threat to your device during a hurricane is water, so keep your equipment safe from the elements by storing it in a baggie or some other type of protective covering.

Have a family communication plan in place. Designate someone out of the area as a central contact, and make certain that all family members know who to contact if they get separated. Most importantly, practice your emergency plan in advance.

Program all of your emergency contact numbers and e-mail addresses into your mobile phone. Numbers should include the police department, fire station and hospital, as well as your family members.

Forward your home number to your wireless number in the event of an evacuation. Because call forwarding is based out of the telephone central office, you will get incoming calls from your landline phone even if your local telephone service is disrupted at your home. In the unlikely event that the central office is not operational, services such as Voicemail, Call Forwarding, Remote Access call forwarding and call forwarding busy line/don?t answer may be useful.

Track the storm and access weather information on your wireless device. Many homes lose power during severe weather. If you have a wireless device that provides access to the Internet or weather and news apps.

Camera phones provide assistance. If you have a camera phone, take, store and send photos even video clips of damaged property to your insurance company from your device.

Take advantage of location-based mapping technology. Services such as AT&T Navigator and AT&T FamilyMap can help you seek evacuation routes or avoid traffic congestion from downed trees or power lines, as well as track a family members wireless device in case you get separated.

Small Business Tips:

Set up a call-forwarding service to a predetermined backup location. Set up a single or multiple hotline number(s) for employees, employee families, customers and partners, as appropriate, to call so that all parties know about the business situation and emergency plan. For this to be most effective, maintain an updated contact list, including mobile and home phone numbers and e-mail addresses, for all employees.

Protect hardware/software/data records/employee records, etc. Routinely back up these files to an off-site location. Use a generator for supplying backup power to vital computer hardware and other mission-critical equipment. Prearrange the replacement of damaged hardware with vendors to ensure quick business recovery.

Outline detailed plans for evacuation and shelter-in-place plans. Practice these plans (employee training, etc.). Establish a backup location for your business and meeting place for all employees.

Assemble a crisis-management team and coordinate efforts with neighboring businesses and building management. Be aware that disasters affecting your suppliers also affect your business. Outline a plan for supply chain continuity for business essentials.

Consider a back-up cellular network. Services like AT&T Remote Mobility Zone, allows organizations to protect their critical communications by installing small cell sites at the business locations. If a disaster disables primary communications networks, the back-up cellular network can help keep your company connected.

Maximizing Service During and After a Hurricane:

Try text messaging. During an emergency situation, text messages may go through more quickly than voice calls because they require fewer network resources. All of AT&T?s wireless devices are text messaging capable. Depending on your text or data plan, additional charges may apply.

Be prepared for high call volume. During an emergency, many people are trying to use their phones at the same time. The increased calling volume may create network congestion, leading to fast busy signals on your wireless phone or a slow dial tone on your landline phone. If this happens, hang up, wait several seconds and then try the call again. This allows your original call data to clear the network before you try again.

Keep non-emergency calls to a minimum, and limit your calls to the most important ones. If there is severe weather, chances are many people will be attempting to place calls to loved ones, friends and business associates.

Families Supporting Adoption: Foster Care and Social Networking

We have a new guest contributor! Meet?Dr. John DeGarmo:

Dr. DeGarmo has been a foster parent for 11 years, now, and he and his wife have had over 30 children come through their home.??Dr. DeGarmo wrote his dissertation on fostering, entitled Responding to the Needs of Foster Children in Rural Schools.??He is a speaker and trainer on many topics about the foster care system, and travels around the nation delivering passionate, dynamic, energetic, and informative presentations.??Dr. DeGarmo is the author of the highly inspirational and bestselling book?Fostering Love: One Foster Parent?s Story.??He also writes for a number of publications and newsletters, both here in the United States, and overseas.?

We are so fortunate that Dr. DeGarmo will be contributing his wealth of knowledge and experience on foster care topics here at the FSA blog.

Fostering Hope: A Foster Care Column

As a foster and adoptive parent myself, I recognize the importance of technology in the lives of children. Indeed, technology is everywhere, and for our children today, it is a large part of their lives. Yet, social network sites, such as Facebook, have opened up a whole new world for those involved in the foster care system. Foster children, foster parents, birth parents, and social workers have all felt the impact of this powerful technological communication tool. Social Networking allows foster children to stay connected to friends and family members from all over. For these children in need, it can very much be a benefit as they stay in touch with birth parents and biological family members.

These sites open up a new way to communicate with birth parents and other biological family members. Facebook and other networking sites allow foster children and birth parents to remain in day to day contact, as it allows the foster child the opportunity to continue in a relationship that is important to him. This may help in allowing him to heal from the separation from his family.?

Social networking does present problems to foster children, though. Some caseworkers may prefer that contact with birth parents be limited. Yet, with social networking, this can be most difficult, and almost impossible, for foster parents to monitor. More and more birth parents are contacting their foster children through social networking sites, many times against the wishes of both foster parents and caseworkers. Birth parents are able to openly communicate with their child unsupervised, which can lead to false accusations as well as false promises from the birth parents. Indeed, social networking is a whole new world for all involved in foster care; a world that can be both wonderful and dangerous at the same time. ?There is the chat component of Facebook,? one caseworker noted, ?where a child and their parent could essentially have a conversation that no one would be able to monitor unless they were sitting right next to the child, which is a grave concern.? Case managers would have to be familiar with the birth parent's Facebook page before the foster child was to even access it. Along with this, there are many reports of foster parents being bullied and stalked by the birth parents through social networking. Another caseworker suggested that, ?I am personally aware of inappropriate things that parents post on their Facebook pages that would not be appropriate for their children to view. Not only might there be inappropriate information and comments on there, there also might be inappropriate photos and other harmful content that the children do not need to be exposed to, not just from the birth parents, but from the internet, in general.? Indeed, social networking is a whole new world for all involved in foster care; a world that can be both wonderful and dangerous at the same time. Much more information and research is needed before the social network explosion engulfs foster care.

Next month, we shall look at some strategies to aid our foster children in this new world of technology.

Dr. DeGarmo can be contacted by email, through his Facebook page, ?or at his website.

Sudan: a front for Israel's proxy war on Sinai jihadis?

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - If Israel bombed a Sudanese munitions factory, as Khartoum alleges, the raid was part of its widening proxy war against Islamist militants in neighboring Egypt which the Jewish state is reluctant to confront directly.

A huge explosion ripped through the factory near the Sudanese capital Khartoum on Tuesday, killing two people, with Sudan swiftly accusing Israel of sending four military planes to take out the complex.

The poor Muslim east African state, with its ties to Iran and Sunni jihadis, has long been seen by Israel as a conduit for weapons smuggled onward to the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip, via the Egyptian Sinai desert.

With Sinai itself becoming a seedbed of al Qaeda-inspired cadres during Cairo's political upheaval, the Israelis now fear such arms could be used against them from within Egyptian territory. That puts Israel in a strategic bind, laid bare by the half-dozen guerrilla attacks it absorbed over the Egyptian border in recent months.

The countries' landmark 1979 peace accord precludes Israeli military action, whether preventive or retaliatory, in the Sinai, and Israel is highly unlikely to risk even a one-off breach given Egypt's unsympathetic new Islamist-led government.

Israel's response, government and military sources said, has been to hit first against those on Egypt's periphery suspected of links to the Sinai militants.

That has meant stepped-up up air strikes on Gazans accused of plotting operations in Sinai, and - to judge by reports from Khartoum - similar escalation in Sudan, to Egypt's south.

Israel has never confirmed or denied carrying out attacks on Sudanese targets. But Israeli defense officials admit placing a high priority on tracking arms trafficking through the country.

The monitoring, one retired official said, dates back to the previous government of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, which waged a 2008-2009 Gaza war to crush Palestinian rocket fire and found itself fending off fierce censure abroad over the civilian toll.

Since early in 2009, shortly before the centrist Olmert was succeeded by the right-wing Benjamin Netanyahu, Sudan has accused Israel of carrying out several strikes on its territory. The sense of a far-flung covert campaign was further fuelled by the Israelis' alleged assassination of a senior Hamas armorer in Dubai in 2010 and abduction for trial of a suspected Palestinian rocket expert from Ukraine the following year.

Commenting tersely on Israel's strategy, the ex-official said it aimed to "stem the flow of arms (to Sinai and Gaza) without triggering major confrontations".

"This is all the more relevant today," the ex-official said, referring to instability in Egypt and surging Sinai militancy.

DRONES TO JETS

Foreign intelligence sources said Israel carried out a unmanned drone raid on a convoy south of Khartoum last month that destroyed 200 tons of munitions, including rockets, intended for Gaza.

Tuesday's blowing up of the Sudanese munitions factory was different to previous incidents, in that a state asset was hit. In a further suggestion of escalation by Israel, witnesses said the sortie was carried out by piloted fighter jets.

Amos Gilad, a senior Israeli defense official, made clear that Sudan should be considered fair game - an enemy like Hamas and Iran - and that Cairo's interests were also at stake.

"It is clear that it (Sudan) supports the smuggling of munitions, or it helps Gaza. In actuality, these munitions pass through Egypt, so it is endangering its major neighbor, Egypt. It harms national security because tomorrow these arms could also be used against the Egyptians," Gilad told Army Radio.

Sudanese Information Minister Ahmed Belal Osman declined to say whether any weapons from the attacked Yarmouk arms factory in Khartoum had ended up in Gaza, saying on Wednesday that only "traditional weapons in line with international law" were produced there.

A Swiss-published 2009 Small Arms Survey sponsored by several European governments found that Iran was a major supplier of light munitions to Sudan.

Khartoum has not said whether Iran was in any way involved in the factory that was bombed. A non-Israeli source briefed on the incident said the air strike focused on the main open area between the plant's main buildings, leaving open the possibility the target was specific personnel or production lines, rather than the whole complex.

Given the some 1,900 km (1,200 mile) distance between Israel and Sudan, some Israeli commentators saw in the alleged raid a warning to Iran, whose similarly remote nuclear facilities the Netanyahu government has hinted it could attack should diplomatic efforts to shut them down fail.

Alex Fishman, senior defense analyst for Israel's top-selling newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth, dubbed the Sudan raid a "live-fire practice run" for Iran.

But the Israeli ex-official, who has an extensive military background, was skeptical about comparing a fenced, open-air Khartoum factory with antiquated air defenses to Iran's dug-in nuclear facilities.

The ex-official also noted the further difference between flying along the Red Sea toward Sudan, an international aviation corridor, to the prospect of Israeli jets reaching Iran through the unfriendly skies of Arab states like Jordan, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia.

"Israel isn't 'signaling' to Iran, just as it's not 'signaling' to the terrorists in Sinai," the ex-official said. "Whatever actions might be taken in Sudan are taken to counter a real, immediate threat."

Though attacks on Israel by Sinai jihadis have been mainly with small arms, there have been occasional short-range rocket launches and Israeli officials worry about possible attempts to down airliners with shoulder-fired missiles.

Coming Home: AmeriCorps Members Return to Mentor Local Youth ...

By Staff
Logo for City Heights Life

Haga clic aqu? para leer en espa?ol

AmeriCorps recently placed five young adults from the area? at Horace Mann Middle School and Crawford High School as part of The California Endowment?s Building Healthy Communities program. Each AmeriCorps mentor will work with 20 students during and after school. The goal is to encourage academic success and improve attitudes toward education.

The AmeriCorps members are planning four service projects during their 11-month program. The goal of these projects is to engage students, residents and community members around issues such as increasing school attendance, improving access to healthcare and decreasing childhood obesity and violence. Their ultimate goal is to make City Heights a healthier, stronger, more vibrant community.

Here is more about the AmeriCorps members, in their words:

Christine Ma
Hi ya?ll! I?m Christine and I?m excited to embark on my year with Building Healthy Communities as an AmeriCorps Mentor and working closely with students at Horace Mann Middle School. A little background on me: I was born and raised in Los Angeles? Chinatown neighborhood. I went to the University of California, San Diego, as a first-generation college student, and I majored in communications and minored in ethnic studies. I had plans for a career as an editor, but in my last year of college, I got heavily involved in student-of-color organizations and activism work, so with this, along with my ethnic studies classes, I really started to develop my social consciousness. After I graduated, I switched career paths to the nonprofit and education fields and working with youth.

After I graduated college, I moved back home and volunteered and interned at Asian- and Pacific Islander-focused nonprofits. I was involved with the Southeast Asian Community Alliance, where I helped the coordinator facilitate an afterschool program that educated high school students on social justice issues. It was here that I cemented my passion of social justice education for youth.

It was extremely rewarding for me to be involved in the same community that I grew up in. And it was so inspirational to see these young people doing youth organizing work and feeling like they have a direct impact in their community, and that is what I hope to continue supporting in more communities of color. One of my favorite aspects of working there were the one-to-one conversations I would have with students, which is why I was so excited for this AmeriCorps position, because I saw the need for more positive, emotional support for students.

Deyna Roberson
I am a 23-year-old San Diego native. I have a beautiful 2-year-old son and 5 younger sisters. I am a University of California, San Diego, graduate and am currently earning my master?s in public health, with a concentration in health promotion and behavioral science. After obtaining my master?s degree, I plan on pursuing a medical degree and hope to become a child and adolescent psychiatrist. I am also a NCAA track and field athlete and two time All-American. My hobbies include singing, songwriting, going to the beach and Boogie Boarding, and running track and field.

I chose to serve as a BHC AmeriCorps member to give back to my community, and more specifically, the children in it. I feel that as a member of the City Heights community, it is not only my passion but duty to help bring others up with me. I doubt I would have made it this far without the positive role models and influences I had growing up. I witnessed both my sister and brother fail to graduate from Crawford High School and this made me well aware that there is something missing in the system to motivate students to stay in school and to encourage them to plan for bright, healthy futures. As an AmeriCorps Mentor, I look forward to instilling hope in the students I will be working with. It?s my desire to not only be a positive role model for these student, but also an example of the many people who care about their well-being, are confident in their potential success, and are willing to invest in their futures.

Yen Vu
My name is Yen and I am one of the youth mentors at Crawford High School for Building Healthy Communities in City Heights. I am a daughter of Vietnamese refugees, born in Oklahoma and raised in the Los Angeles area. I moved to San Diego in 2007 to attend the University of California, San Diego. I am now a first generation college graduate with a bachelor?s degree in psychology and a minor in education studies.

While in college, I was involved in progressive students-of-color organizations geared toward social justice activism. I became familiar with City Heights through mentoring and tutoring at some of the local schools. I chose to return to City Heights after I graduated because I recalled how at home I felt when I first stepped foot there. It reflects the community I grew up in and the kind of place I hope to root myself.

Growing up, I often witnessed economic inequalities that affected my education and limited the resources that were available to my working-class parents. I wasn?t able to articulate or understand my family?s struggles or the challenges that people from communities like mine faced until I came to college. Through education, I became empowered and realized the potentials of social change and how I can take part in that movement. In college I started working with youth through implementing access and outreach programs that catered to underserved and underrepresented students. Immediately after graduation, I went to Oakland to pursue community organizing. While I was there, I realized that the skills I was learning in organizing aligned with my passion in working with youths. I believe that the most effective change happens in the community through collaboration and empowerment. I hold the same belief in my pursuance of a future career as an educator. I want to work inside the classroom, directly with students, to empower them to become more socially conscious and ready to question the structural barriers that affect them, their family, and their community.

Gracelynne West
Hi everyone! My name is Gracelynne West and I currently serve as one of the Building Healthy Communities AmeriCorps Mentors at Horace Mann Middle School. I am originally from San Diego, the North Park and Linda Vista area, and I am a graduate of San Diego High School and an alumna of the SDHS Women?s Tennis Team. I also recently graduated from the University of California, San Diego, as an ethnic studies major and I am passionate about working within my local community.

I was the first person in my family to attend college, so it was a big accomplishment for both my family and me as well. I have worked with youth in afterschool and summer enrichment programs. I also recently completed an AmeriCorps term with the local nonprofit, MAAC project, which provides services for low-income families and youth in Spring Valley. I really enjoy community engagement work and working with other community members to navigate resources and services.

I have served as a canvasser with Alliance San Diego in previous campaigns to educate and engage new and occasional voters in predominantly low-income communities of color. At first, it was difficult to assert myself to others, but I eventually built up confidence speaking to people by recognizing why I am passionate about community work. Every time I work with youth, I always learn something new or catch something that I have never thought of before; they have such diverse experiences and different views of the world, and I think that is the beauty of working with youth because we are both learning from each other.

Laura Yamaguchi
Hi everyone, my name is Laura Yamaguchi and I?m very excited to begin my second year as a BHC AmeriCorps Mentor at Crawford High School. Last year was such an adventure for me ? a growth experience for myself as well as the students I mentored. I look forward to deepening my connections with students and encouraging them to live out their dreams.

I began my work with youth when I was 16 and my first job was teaching second graders about different birds at the San Diego Zoo. In college, I worked with student groups of color and outreached to San Diego high school students about college access. After graduating from the University of California, San Diego, with my bachelor of the arts in Spanish literature and a minor in ethnic studies, I pursued a career in youth- and community-based development in communities of color.

I started with a labor organizing internship at the Oakland International Airport, and then went on to empower youth through writing programs in San Francisco. I finally moved back to my hometown of La Mesa and I continued partnering with youth in schools as a special education assistant in the San Diego Unified School District. Last year, I pursued an opportunity to mentor ninth graders at Crawford High School through AmeriCorps. If it?s going to be anything like last year, I?m ready to take students surfing at the beach, making sushi with the Japanese club, going to San Diego State and UCSD high school conferences, and reciting lots and lots of One Direction lyrics.

An Honest Review of the iPad | Travel

The iPad is turning out to be one of the most popular gadgets of recent years. Some people are still skeptical of them while others were gung ho about purchasing one already.

These folks are probably wondering if it?s really worth the money because they aren?t familiar enough with its capabilities yet. The following article information will show you the in?s and out?s of the iPad.

Pay your nearest Apple store a visit if you have the opportunity to do so, it is worth the effort. If there isn?t an Apple store near where you live, work, or go to school, consider visiting one when you travel. The great thing about these stores is that they allow you to have a ?hands on? experience with the devices before you buy them. Not only do you get the benefit of a hands on experience but you also get to ask questions and interact with a sales staff that is well trained to help you discern how an iPad could benefit you most. There are lots of reasons to do this even if you plan to buy for a lower price online. Computer game fans will adore the gaming capacity of the iPad. 3D games look amazing on the high quality screen of the iPad. However, some serious gamers have complained that playing games on this device isn?t as convenient as on a regular computer, where you use a keyboard and a mouse or wheel. There is a new accessory on the horizon though that will eliminate these problems and make the iPad a better choice for gaming. Until that moment though gamers will have some gaming capabilities but not enough to really make hard core gamers happy.

One major complaint with the iPad is that it won?t support flash which causes some limitations when viewing videos on some websites. Since you can get an app for You Tube videos this isn?t really that big a deal.

Apple does not support flash on this device because of the fact that it?s slow and hogs your memory. In the near future, however, it?s likely that there will be more alternatives to flash, such as HTML5, which YouTube is already experimenting with. You might not be happy with the iPad if you need flash to access website features.

The fact is that this device is fun and fascinating. The decision to buy one is yours. We?ve given you the pros and cons to consider. Because this is only the first generation of the device it?s likely we will see upgrades in the future. golf schools
